Any wireless experts here?

Postby [RS] Hughie » Sun Jan 08, 2012 4:06 pm

I'm fed up of seeing a network cable trailing its was up my hall.
I need to go wireless.

Firstly, what's the latest spec for wireless equipment and do I need it?
Secondly, what's best,a PCI adaptor card or an external USB type? Cost will come into it.

Before you answer the first,I am thinking of ditching Sky (spit) and going to BT Infinity.

Thanks guys.

Wireless N is the latest but I've seen many people having problems with it :-( it will also depend on your building (what its made of) walls and floors the more of them the lower the signal will be! To be honest wired is the way forward for games!

Thanks Brain.
The router will be no more than 10 feet away and on the same floor.
To be honest I have not had much luck going wireless before when it comes to gaming.

If that's the case then wireless will be no problem as long as the hardware (router/access point) your using is of a high enough standard! O say this as the wireless on the virgin media superhub is shockingly bad! And a few other (mainly Netgear based) routers have had problems with the default firmware and have needed third party firmware to make best use of the hardware!

Have you not considered powerline adapters?

I have 4 Powerline adapers and they are rock solid and so easy to instal. Literally just plug and play.

I have one for the TV and the other for the Kids bedrooms.

They even work through multi sockets.

This is what i bought 85 MBS is enougn for internet traffic but you can get faster if you thinking about about sending large files through the network.

I have some D-Link powerline adapters (DHP-307AV) and they run the same speed as my wired connection... not that I have a great connection anyway, but they piss on the wireless. Admittedly they are in a box gathering dust but I was very impressed with them. About £60 I think when I bought them a good few months ago? Got them for my Mrs when she's streaming pron in the bedroom away from the router.... honest
